About FT232RL
The FT232R is the latest device to be added to FTDI?s range of USB UART interface Integrated Circuit Devices. The FT232R is a USB to serial UART interface with optional clock generator output and the new FTDIChip-ID? security dongle feature. In addition, asynchronous and synchronous bit bang interface modes are available. USB to serial designs using the FT232R have been further simplified by fully integrating the external EEPROM, clock circuit and USB resistors onto the device.
The FT232R adds two new functions compared with its predecessors, effectively making it a "3-in-1" chip for some application areas. The internally generated clock (6MHz, 12MHz, 24MHz, and 48MHz) can be brought out of the device and used to drive a microcontroller or external logic. A unique number (the FTDI Chip-ID?) is burnt into the device during manufacture and is readable over USB, thus forming the basis of a security dongle that can be used to protect customer application software from being copied.

About CP2102
The CP2102 is a highly-integrated USB-to-UART Bridge Controller providing a simple solution for updating RS-232 designs to USB using a minimum of components and PCB space. The CP2102 includes a USB2.0 full-speed function controller, USB transceiver, oscillator, EEPROM, and asynchronous serial data bus(UART) with full modem control signals in a compact 5 x 5mm QFN-28 package. No other external USB components are required. The on-chip EEPROM may be used to customized the USB Vendor ID, product ID, product description string, power descriptor, device release number, and device serial number as desired for OEM applications. The EEPROM is programmed on-board via the USB, allowing the programming step to be easily integrated into the product manufacturing and testing process.
Royalty-free Virtual COM Port(VCP) device drivers provided by Silicon Laboratories allow a CP2102-based product to appear as a COM port to PC applications. The CP2102 UART interface implements all RS-232 signals, including control and handshaking signals, so existing system firmware does not need to be modified. In many existing RS-232 designs, all that is required to update the design from RS232 to USB to replace the RS232 level-translator with the CP2102. Direct access driver support is available through the Silicom Laboratories USBXpress driver set.

It provides a simple and easy way to use bridge/connectivity between the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Serial Port Interface. With the advantage of USB port, users have the capability to utilize the peripheral with serial port interface in an easy-to-use environment such as plug and play & hot swap function. This single chip is designed for ideal connections to Cellular Phone, Digital Camera, Modems or ISDN terminal adapters with over 1Mbps data transfer rate. The PL-2303 device and software drivers are capable of providing a no-firmware-change feature that enables USB interface to be transparent to serial port peripherals with minimum modifications
